Living Downstream is a program for people who'd like to learn about environmental topics of interest in the Umpqua Watershed of southern Oregon and the larger Pacific Northwest region. It is coordinated by the AmeriCorps member serving as the Environmental Education & Outreach Leader for the Umpqua Watershed organization in an effort to bring awareness of environmental issues to a wider audience.

He also goes into what equipment he uses and offers advice and tips to anybody else who may be interested in a similar career path to himself. This episode of living downstream is a recording from a panel about climate change. The panel features several experts and members of the Umpqua Watersheds team. Beginning with an explanation of the greenhouse effect and how humans influence it, this panel goes on to discuss topics such as the effects of climate change on sensitive species, animal migration, drought, and other similar issues are discussed.

In the first half of this episode, two members of the Wildlife Images Rehabilitation and and Education Center team, Kaitlyn Scheffler and Billy Crawford discuss what their organization does, including how they educate people about wildlife and how they save injured animals. They also discuss what challenges our native wildlife face, including such things as climate change, conflicts with humans, and more.
In the second half, we hear from Lepidopterist and Professor of Entomology at WSU, David James. He covers some basic butterfly and moth facts, discusses his book on the subject, and dives into what butterflies offer our ecosystem and the importance of researching them. He talks about sustainable pest management and how people can help to preserve our native butterfly populations.

This episode is the first of a series of climate related episodes of Living Downstream that will be airing once to twice a month. In this episode, several members of the Umpqua Watersheds team, including Executive Director Kasey Hovik, Conservation and Legal Director Angela Jensen, and Director of Education and Outreach Ryan Kincaid share what got them involved in the topic of and fight against climate change. They cover some basics about what climate change is and how people affect it as well as how it effects people. They delve into some misconceptions about climate change and offer some of their unique perspectives and knowledge about the topic overall.

In this episode of Living Downstream, we hear from the founder and president of PFLAG Roseburg, Mark Lenihan. He talks about the inspiration for PFLAG Roseburg as well as the LGBTQ+ issues in our community and the upcoming Pride Parade. He also offers resources for where people can learn more, what people can do to help, and he emphasizes the importance of activism and volunteerism in our community.
In the second half of this episode we hear from two business owners who will be vendors at the Pride Parade this summer. They discuss their business, Passion Drawn in Ink, and go into detail about the connection between social justice, environmentalism, and expression through art as tools of positive change to make the world a nicer place for ourselves and future generations.

This weekend’s episode will take us somewhere we have not yet explored during Living Downstream – the coast! Episode 23 focuses on a type of ocean ecosystem called a “kelp forest”, and some of its inhabitants. Various factors are transforming these aquatic systems into urchin barrens, which are unsuitable habitats for otters and other species. Hear from The Elakha Alliance’s Bob Bailey and Tom Calvanese of the Oregon Kelp Alliance to hear what diverse groups of stakeholders are doing to help Oregon’s sea otters, and the kelp forests they need to survive.
